Road Tax Calculation in Bihar
Bihar uses a flat-rate road tax system across all price ranges. Petrol and CNG cars are taxed at 6% of the ex-showroom price, while diesel cars attract a higher rate of 7% due to the perceived environmental impact. This flat structure means that the tax amount scales linearly with vehicle cost, unlike slab-based states where the percentage increases at higher price points.
For example, a ₹10 lakh petrol car in Bihar would cost ₹60,000 in road tax. A diesel car at the same price would cost ₹70,000. For a luxury ₹50 lakh diesel car, the tax would be ₹3,50,000 — significantly lower than in states like Kerala or Karnataka where rates can exceed 18-20% at that price point. This makes Bihar relatively affordable for high-value vehicle purchases.
EV Exemption in Bihar
Bihar offers full road tax exemption for electric vehicles as part of its clean mobility initiatives. The state has been promoting EV adoption through the Bihar EV Policy, which includes 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees for the first registration. This can save EV buyers anywhere from ₹50,000 to several lakh rupees depending on the vehicle price. The state has also announced plans for charging infrastructure in Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur.
Two-Wheeler Rates
Two-wheelers in Bihar are taxed at 5% of ex-showroom price, with registration fee of ₹300 and HSRP charge of ₹200. For a popular commuter bike priced at ₹1 lakh, the total registration cost including tax would be approximately ₹5,500. This moderate rate keeps two-wheeler ownership accessible in a state where two-wheelers constitute a major mode of transport.
