Vehicle Registration Process in Delhi

Delhi's vehicle registration is managed by the Delhi Transport Department with RTO offices across the capital including Dwarka, Lado Sarai, Janakpuri, Mayur Vihar, Rohini, Sarai Kale Khan, and Wazirpur. As the national capital, Delhi follows strict emission norms and registration procedures under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules with additional Delhi-specific regulations.

New vehicle buyers in Delhi must complete registration within 30 days of purchase. The dealer issues temporary registration initially. For permanent registration, you visit the designated RTO with all documents. Delhi RTO conducts thorough vehicle verification including emission checks given the city's pollution concerns. Once approved, the registration number is issued in the DL-XX-XXXX format. Delhi also mandates colour-coded stickers for fuel type identification — blue for petrol/CNG and orange for diesel.

Road Tax Calculation in Delhi

Delhi uses a slab-based road tax system with different rates for petrol/CNG and diesel vehicles. The rates are designed to discourage diesel vehicle ownership due to Delhi's severe air pollution. Petrol and CNG vehicles are taxed at 4% for vehicles under ₹6 lakh, 7% for ₹6-10 lakh, and 10% for above ₹10 lakh. Diesel vehicles face higher rates of 5%, 8.75%, and 12.5% respectively across the same slabs.

For example, a ₹8 lakh petrol car in Delhi attracts 7% tax amounting to ₹56,000. A diesel car at the same price would cost ₹70,000 at 8.75%. For a ₹15 lakh petrol car, the tax is 10% (₹1,50,000), while the diesel variant would attract 12.5% (₹1,87,500). The higher diesel rates reflect the Delhi government's policy to discourage dieselisation in the capital.

EV Exemption in Delhi

Delhi offers a full road tax exemption for electric vehicles under the Delhi EV Policy 2.0. This is part of the government's aggressive push towards EV adoption to combat air pollution. EV buyers in Delhi save the entire road tax amount — for a ₹15 lakh EV, this means a saving of up to ₹1.5 lakh compared to a petrol car. The policy also offers purchase incentives of up to ₹1.5 lakh for two-wheelers and ₹30,000 for four-wheelers, making EVs particularly attractive in the capital.

Two-Wheeler Rates

Two-wheelers in Delhi are taxed at 3% for models up to ₹2 lakh and 5% for premium models above ₹2 lakh. Registration fee is ₹300 with HSRP at ₹200. Delhi also offers purchase incentives for electric two-wheelers under the EV policy.
