Rajasthan, India's largest state by area, manages its vehicle registration through a network of Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) spread across its 50 districts. The major RTO hubs include Jaipur (RJ 14), Jodhpur (RJ 19), Udaipur (RJ 27), Kota (RJ 29), Bikaner (RJ 07), Ajmer (RJ 01), and Alwar (RJ 02). The Jaipur RTO, serving the state capital, handles the highest volume of new vehicle registrations. Each district in Rajasthan has a unique two-digit RTO code prefixed with RJ, making it easy to identify a vehicle's place of registration at a glance.
Rajasthan's diverse geography — from the Thar Desert in the west to the Aravali mountain range in the southeast — influences vehicle preferences across the state. In desert districts like Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Bikaner, robust SUVs and all-terrain vehicles are popular due to sandy terrain and extreme temperatures. The tourist-heavy cities of Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur see a high number of tourist taxi and rental vehicle registrations. Rajasthan has one of the most aggressive RTO digitisation programs in North India, with the Sarthi and Vahan portals enabling most registration-related services online. The state also conducts regular vehicle inspection camps in rural areas to facilitate registration for remote communities.
How Road Tax Is Calculated in Rajasthan
Rajasthan offers one of the lowest flat-rate road tax structures in India. Petrol and CNG vehicles attract only 4% road tax on the ex-showroom price, making it highly affordable for buyers of petrol vehicles. Diesel vehicles are taxed at a slightly higher 5%, while electric vehicles enjoy a full exemption at 0%. Commercial vehicles are taxed at 5% of the ex-showroom price. The lower rates compared to neighbouring states make Rajasthan an attractive destination for vehicle registration, provided the buyer has a valid Rajasthan address.
To illustrate, consider a petrol sedan with an ex-showroom price of ₹11,00,000. The road tax in Rajasthan would be ₹11,00,000 × 4% = ₹44,000. Adding the registration fee of ₹600 and HSRP cost of ₹400, the total RTO charges amount to ₹45,000. A diesel variant of the same car would incur ₹11,00,000 × 5% = ₹55,000 in road tax, totalling ₹56,000 with fees. For an EV priced at ₹11,00,000, the RTO charges are just ₹1,000, representing a saving of ₹44,000 over the petrol version and ₹55,000 over the diesel version. This substantial difference makes EVs an exceptionally cost-effective choice in Rajasthan.
Electric Vehicle (EV) Exemption Policy
Rajasthan has implemented a full road tax exemption for all categories of electric vehicles. The exemption covers electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers without any price cap or time-bound restriction under the current policy. Rajasthan's EV policy also complements the FAME II scheme by providing additional incentives for EV manufacturing and charging infrastructure development in the state. Cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur have seen a gradual increase in EV charging stations, further supporting the adoption of electric mobility.
Required Documents for Vehicle Registration
For vehicle registration in Rajasthan, the required documents include: Form 20 (registration application), Form 21 (dealer's sale certificate), Form 22 (manufacturer's road worthiness certificate), valid motor insurance policy, address proof (Aadhaar, electricity bill, or ration card), identity proof (Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence), PAN card, two passport-size photographs, and the temporary registration certificate if applicable. For commercial vehicles, additional documents such as the permit application and fitness certificate are required.
